I'm not certain about this, but I believe the V3APL1 firmware and December kernel combo do not allow rolling back updates. I've had no luck on my original Rogers Note 7 in changing the firmware - tried Odin, ADB, TWRP, among other strategies. I'm now seeing what I can do with flashing an older kernel. I'll let you know if/when I have success in getting my phone operational again.
18gsir didn't write what firmware release he had before using the shield v2.
If you are hit by the kill update, there is no way back yet. That's why the N930W8VLU3APL1 firmware is baseband 3, while the earlier ones with full charging ability are baseband 2.
And downgrading to a fw with lower baseband version is blocked by an e-fuse.
Shield protects you if installed and activated BEFORE the update happens, it doesn't roll back.

Have you since been able to get it operational, if so, how?? TIA

Actually soft bricked it a while back, but I haven't gotten the chance to unbrick it. I've essentially made no actualized progress since I started this research. Can't flash old kernels as that triggers the e-fuse; can't get TWRP loaded (I did once, but Samsung reflashes the stock recovery once you reboot, so if you do successfully flash TWRP through Odin, DO NOT RESTART THE PHONE like I did), and custom ROMming is out of the scope since the bootloader can't be unlocked.
If you can TWRP, you're on your way to success potentially. I still can't confirm if the China Qualcomm TWRP can actually work on the W8, but there's only one way to find out :)
