Trying to get the Alliance Shield to block OTA updates on my note 7, the tutorial references v2, but the download page is now showing X or v3. Is v3 the one to use now for an AT&T Note 7?

Shield X (v3) now recommended as it has more funtcions.

How is the current status of your Note? Did you protect it before with some measures? Please specify.
Maybe there's no need to change anything.

I was wondering if I should use V2 or V3 for my Note 7 and does it have to be rooted to use them?

You don't really need any app or root actually. Only tool you need is adb. Then issue adb shell pm hide 'package name'. Find more about pm list, pm hide and pm uninstall by googling them. You'll find the name of the software updates apps in these forums.

this only works with AT&T and VZW models, but not with Sprint or T-mobile and most none-US models, cause of an Android (not Samsung) security patch, which was already implemeted there before the recall.

I can't seem to find that original list of packages anymore? I had it when I used the simple Package Disabler app but since it was updated I can't even get in to see what I disabled without updating.. I got another at&t Note that hasn't been updated and I wasn't aware I could just use ADB on that one. I'm all about the shield but ADB would be so simple

The ADB stuff is in the following post (section AT&T + Verizon ONLY), if you like to try it:
